Is White Alumina a good option for use with copper and aluminium wire
We use a very high purity (99.8%) Alumina with a very fine grain to make our eyelets. After we manufacturer the eyelets, we fire in the Kiln in excess of 3200 degrees Fahrenheit(1760 Celsius)
The results are a very hard, durable and long life-surface.
Many eyelets in the market are only low 90% purity and larger grain particles. Many are glazed and will be very glossy. These will be beautiful. However, the surface will wear quickly and once the glaze is worn from contact, underneath will be very sharp-edged particles and excessive dusting of copper or aluminum build-up will occur.
I added the pink to the quote to provide the option. Personally, I was more favorable to the white as it made it easier to see dusting and build-up.
The wire industry I came from manufactured Silver plated, Nickel Plated, Tin Plated copper and copper alloys as well as Aluminum. All for the Commercial Aerospace, Military, and Medical applications. Surface quality was very critical requirements.
I been involved in wire manufacturing since 1978. Sometimes it can be a challenge…I still enjoy it and there is always opportunities to learn…
What is the difference between a Pink Alumina Eyelet vs a White Alumina Eyelet?
The difference is a small amount of Chromium is added to our p which will make the eyelets even more wear resistant. The Chromium bonds with the Alumina during firing and turns them the pink color. Titania Ceramic can be good choice for processing Aluminum. However, if you run copper also through these they will wear too quickly.
